Grade 1/2/3
Tasmanian Aboriginal Ningher Canoes
In the Grade 1/2/3 class we have been investigating the Tasmanian Aboriginal bark canoes, known as Ningher Canoes. We began our investigation by looking at images and videos of what they looked like and how they are made. Each student then sketched the canoe and made their own model from air drying clay. We have been learning some interesting things about these canoes, such as:
- They could hold up to 7 fully grown men
- They had a hearth on the front where a fire could be lit to keep the passengers warm at sea and ward off bad energy
- They were used for hunting, trade and travel
We are now working on painting our canoes and will be creating a display in Term 3. When our display is complete, we would love for you to come in a see our work.
