2/3 Visit The Museum
On Thursday the 4th of February the Grade 2/3 class ventured to the East Coast Heritage Museum for an excursion. While we were there, we viewed a historical diorama of Swansea. We looked at historical tools, such as a sugar snipper, a raisin shredder, a vegetable cutter and a cockroach trap. We walked through the old classroom and saw a school uniform from 1860. Evie noticed the ink wells in the old desks and we saw some photos of the old school building.
Many students were excited to recognise a model of a Ningher Canoe in one of the rooms and share some of the facts that we learned about them last year with Maureen. We had seen a photo of this model last year, made by Rex Greeno.
We viewed some amazing maireener shell necklaces (one of which was made by Dulcie Greeno- Rex Greeno’s Mother), a bull kelp water carrier (made by Yvonne Copper) and some different types of woven baskets. We also saw some photos of a thylacine and learned that a thylacine tail was a lot like a kangaroo tail and helped them with stability.
Finally we walked through the War Memorial room, where we saw a variety of Military uniforms, war memorabilia and the big competition- sized Billiards table, which was once in the old school room and provided a place for ex-servicemen to socialise with other ex- servicemen.
This was a fantastic learning experience for our class and we look forward to our next visit to the East Coast Heritage Museum. Thank you very much to Maureen Martin Ferris.
