Grade 4/5/6
On Monday 13th September, Gina from Hydro Tasmania came to visit our school for an incursion.
The 4/5/6 class participated in a hands on session where Gina showed everyone what electricity is and how it can be generated.
Students were challenged to make a water turbine structure using just one plate, 5 straws, sticky tape and one pelton turbine.

Tia |
I was spinning the wheel to make the light |
Chloe |
I leaned that it’s good to draw your thoughts down before making it, then fiddle around to adjust your end product. |
Ivy |
I was wondering what would happen if I turned it backwards. |
Alice |
I learnt that you can use water to make electricity by using the force of water to spin a turbine. |
Abby |
I was wondering if our design was going to work. |
Alex |
What does North and South mean on the magnet? I was dragging the magnet across the copper. |
Millie |
I learnt that when a magnet and copper spin it creates electricity. |
Ruby |
I was wondering how to make the turbine spin. |
Summa |
Ava and I built a pelton wheel and I was wondering if our design would work. |
Xearna |
We were trying to find a way for the turbine to spin with no water on it. |
Gabriel |
I was thinking that if you spin it faster the light bulb will blow! |
Arcena |
I thought that the pressure of the water would make it fall apart. |
Lilly |
The water went through the turbine but it wasn’t very stable. |
Ava |
I learnt that when you wrap copper around a magnet and spin it, it makes electricity. |
