Grade 4/5/6

Poetry

After camp and surfing day, the 4/5/6 class have been honing their skills in descriptive writing.  We have been learning about poetic devices such as simile and metaphor and trying our hand at writing different forms of poetry such as cinquain and haiku.

Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry made of short lines that don't rhyme. Haiku are usually about the natural world. The most common form of haiku is a three-line poem with a 5-7-5 syllable pattern.  It is challenging to get the syllable pattern correct and we had to consider good vocabulary and use of synonyms in our word choices.  For our first attempt at writing a haiku we chose a colour to write about and find an appropriate image to match the content. Our second haiku was about something natural - which we shared in assembly.
