Welcome to Term 3! Can you spot the resident Kookaburra's showing their 'courage' this week and can you believe it is the beginning of August tomorrow. Wow, time really flies when you're having fun! There has been so much happening here at SPS lately and there is a definite buzz in the air. The 'normality' of school life, the routines and expectations kicked off right from day 1 and we have seen many students demonstrating our values of aspiration, growth, courage and respect as you will no doubt read in their reports coming home today.
You would all be aware that we are conducting a Silent Auction fundraiser for funds to go towards a community bike and scooter pump track here at SPS. We are excited to report that we have moved into Stage 2 of the FRRR Grant process and have our fingers and toes crossed. The Silent Auction will take place online in a format similar to eBay where you can place a bid and will be notified if your bid has been outbid by someone else. It wont say who has outbid you but it will ask you if you would like to make another bid.
We have had an overwhelming response from our community and small local businesses with over 50 contributions so far. If we manage to receive bids at the recommended retail value, this fundraiser could potentially provide the school with $10,000 of funds towards the new scooter track/surrounding playground space. If you have anyone who may want to make a contribution or a donation, it isn't too late. The Auction will go live on Monday and a hard copy brochure will be sent home with each family early next week. The auction will be open for bids between 3rd - 21st August and if you need any help with making a bid, pop in to see us and we will gladly help you.
Please gather together with your friends or family and help us to share the auction and get involved. We would love to have your support.
Enjoy your weekend and let's hope this glorious sunshine continues.

Building a model of our school with plastercine and other materials.

The Schouten Sustainability group spent some time on Jubilee Beach, doing a fantasic job of collecting rubbish to fill Simon the SwanSea Eagle. Initally we struggled to find any rubbish because our beautiful beach is so clean! Simon is a collaborative project that will clean our beach and school grounds, and turn this rubbish into an art piece.

In science we have been preparing for science week, which is in week five this term. The theme for this year is Deep Blue: innovation for the future of our oceans.
In small groups we made models of the zones of the ocean depths by using liquids of varying densities that do not mix together.

In groups we also made posters to communicate our understanding of how deep the oceans of the world are. We have begun to consider what adaptations living things need to survive in the depths of the ocean.

This term, the Grade 1/2/3 class have been putting the final touches on our Ningher canoe models (Tasmanian Aboriginal bark canoes), ready to make our display. We have been learning some interesting things about these canoes, such as the different materials they were made out of. The materials used, depended on where in the state they were made. On the East Coast they were made from reeds, on the South they were made from paper bark and in the North- West they were made from stringy bark. We also learned that they were not just used for short fishing trips, but went as far as Maatsuyker Island, Treefall Island, Hunter Island and out to Eddystone Rocks. When our display is complete, we would love for families to come in and see what we have been working on, as well as learn about this amazing piece of Tasmanian Aboriginal history.
This week we had our first LiL session for Term 3 and it was a wonderful morning. Miss Murray and I are running these sessions and again would appreciate any support and networking to make our SPS LiL sessions benefit as many parents and children within our community as we can.
