STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. STEM is addressed in the Australian Curriculum through the learning areas of Science, Technologies, and Mathematics, and through general capabilities, particularly Numeracy, Information and Communication Technology Capabilities, and Critical and Creative Thinking. Research shows that STEM knowledge, understanding and skills are strengthened when the connections between learning areas are emphasised and enriched when learning areas are combined to find authentic learning opportunities for students in answer to an identified problem or in the creation of a solution. As part of our Prep and Grade One, STEM Air Rocket Inquiry, we have been exploring the questions: How do the air rockets fly? and How can do we know which rocket flew the furthest? This learning fits within our term 3 Inquiry question “What makes things move?” Here are some of the things we have been thinking about.
How do the air rockets fly?
Georgina “Maybe they have springs in them”
Riley “Maybe it’s an explosion”
Flora “Gravity makes them come down again”
Emmett “Maybe it has batteries in it”
Ella: “Maybe you are pushing the rocket up with the handle”
Emmett “I think you have to point it up”
Georgina “I think it has something to do with the air”
Poppie “Maybe the air gets stuck because it can’t get out the bottom”
Ella “I think the air goes up which means the rocket has to go up”
Flora “The air is trapped so it forces this bit to go up”
How can do we know which rocket flew the furthest?
Riley “Cos we have to measure it”
Poppie “You have to have numbers that start at zero and get bigger”
Flora “You all have to start at the same spot”
Ella “The distance between the numbers has to be the same or else it’s not fair”
Georgina “We could write it down and compare it”
Emmett “If I aim up high like this, it goes further”
Aleighna “To take turns we need three groups”
Melody “I put it in columns” … “next it’s my second turn”
Poppie “We can record the initials on the ground”
Emmett “It was getting big but then the wind moved it”
