New facilities for Swansea Primary School
As you would know, Swansea Primary School is undergoing a $488,000 upgrade of the library space, including new spaces for student support and visiting health professionals and construction of an outdoor learning area.
This is great news for our students, staff and the Swansea community, with the library servicing not only our school, but also the local community two days per week.
As part of the works, the Swansea Online Access Centre is to be integrated into the new library space to continue to offer a range of services to residents and visitors to the area.
With construction works already underway, the contractor now needs to undertake asbestos removal. The contractor, Batchelor Construction Group, will oversee this work in accordance with workplace standards for asbestos removal and there is a rigorous process for doing this on the school site. The removal plan must also be cleared by a third party to ensure it complies with these standards prior to commencement. We envisage for this to take place over 5 days, in early September.
The area undergoing this work is being securely cordoned off from the rest of the site to provide extra assurance for students, staff and the community.
During this time, school drop off and pick up will be via the front gate on the Tasman Highway. The car park will be cordened off and cars and pedestrians will not be permitted. Staff will be on duty from 8:25am each day both on the main road and in the front yard to support this interruption. We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.
We look forward to sharing further updates as the project progresses. Your patience and support during this period of transition is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Our Book Week Parade on Wednesday 23rd August was a huge success. All students dressed up in a range of fabulous costumes showing their love of reading and literature. We were joined in our parade and presentation at Jubilee Beach by Childcare and Launching into Learning children. It was fun to hear the students announce themselves and explain what character they were dressed as and from what book. The involvement of all students is evidence of the value families and school puts on the importance of reading. We can all be encouraged by the theme for this year; Read, Grow, Inspire and consider picking up a good book as great way to learn or relax.

As part of the School Lunch Project, children are receiving free cooked lunches on some days each week. To help better understand the benefits and challenges of providing cooked school lunches, researchers from the University of Tasmania are interested in hearing feedback from parents and caregivers in Term 3. You are invited to complete a short survey. Every parent who completes a survey will go in the draw to win a $20 Visa/Mastercard voucher. We are also conducting discussion groups/interviews with parents and caregivers which will be held at the school, you can express your interest in taking part in the discussion group at the link. Every person who takes part will receive a $50 voucher for participation. We will be at Swansea Primary School for interviews and discussion groups on Wednesday the 6th of September.
We recently discovered a glitch in some of the surveys where some parents were unable to complete the full survey. We have corrected the error and now have new links for the survey below.

On Friday 18th August, SRC represented SPS at the Vietnam Veteran's Day - Long Tan Day - to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the official end of the Vietnam War 1962-1973. We contributed to the creation of the Long Tan Replica Cross to be installed at the cenotaph and unveiled on 11th November at the Remembrance Day Service. It was a very moving tribute and we were happy to sit in the rain for a welcomed hot chocolate at the end.
On the 15th of August, Mrs Wells organised for students from Prep to year 6 to go on an excursion to Tasman Sea Salt at Mayfield to learn about science and innovation used in salt harvesting. The tour provided by Chris and Alice was an insightful experience for students as they were able to see all the stages and processes and how technology is used in the production of the salt. Alice also provided a tasting opportunity for students, and they learnt about how salt enhances the flavour of both savoury and sweet food. We were fortunate to have perfect weather so that all students had an opportunity to explore, investigate and inquire about the local environment at Mayfield afterwards too!

Last Thursday, Mrs Wells and the 5/6 class organised a science expo by inviting representatives from local industries to come in to school and share and explain how innovations have changed their work and how technology might be used in the future to improve their idustry. Students from grade 1 to grade 6 were intrigued with presentations and we would like to thank the following people for volunteering their time and sharing their knowledge with us:
