Wow! What a fortnight. The days are flying by, packed full of fun and learning!
On Friday last week, I attended the GRIP Leadership Conference at the Derwent Entertainment Centre with our Year 6 Leaders. It was a great day which provided time for us to build our relationships, make connections with students from other schools and most importantly, provided an opportunity for me to learn from and listen to the student voice within our school.

On Monday we held our annual Swan vs Oyster Athletics carnival and what a treat that was. So many smiling faces and, I have never seen so many ribbons. These events don’t happen without a dedicated team of staff and I would like to thank them all for their efforts on the day. A special mention to our PE staff, Bronwyn and Rikki for their organisation and planning, it was a wonderful day. For the first time in a decade, Swan took out the win! Congratulations to all of our competitors and I look forward to attending the SPSSA competition on Wednesday 11th March. Please note, we have changed our Week 6 Assembly from Wednesday 11th to Thursday 12th March due to this clash.
Our ‘Sustainable Learning’ program is in full swing and it has been a delight to hear about the authentic learning experiences happening during this designated time. Students are working within vertical groups from K-6 learning about the world around them. These cooperative learning activities help to promote wellbeing, connectedness and team work. If you have any expertise in the living environment, photography, art or sustainability we would love to hear from you and invite you to visit us on a Wednesday afternoon.

Grade 1/2/3 Topic Talks
This week our 'Topic Talks' have been about something old. Some students brought in things that they have owned for a year and others brought in things that they had been given when they were babies.
We also had a few examples of older items such as a rusty Clydesdale horse shoe, old farm equipment, an old pencil sharpener, a regular horse shoe and a very old watch.
We have been relating our 'Topic Talks' to our History work that looks at the past, the present and making predictions about the future. We did an activity about Henry’s Great Grandfather’s watch and compared it to some of the watches in the classroom. We then made predictions about watches in the future.
Next week’s Topic Talk is about a special place which will possibly prompt conversations about the connections that we have to places.

SWAN V OYSTER ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Thank you so much to everyone who came along to support our annual Swan v Oyster Athletics Carnival. A special thank you to all of the staff, volunteers and our wonderful Sports Captains for your help in organising a very successful day. We are very proud of all of the students for the effort they put into every race (as well as the very important job of cheering for their friends and team mates). Last, but certainly not least, a big congratulations to Swan!

Mathematics
In Maths we have been working in focus groups on understanding place value of big numbers.
Some students have been exploring square and triangular numbers and others have been investigating how to represent fractions, decimals and percentages.
Sometimes we play games to reinforce our understandings and develop our problem-solving skills and mathematics communication skills.
Art
In visual arts we have explored representations of emotions through warm and cool colours. We have created art folder designs that reflect the type of people we are.
English
Our spelling words are targeted to learn spelling patterns as well as words that are used frequently in our own writing. We’ve learnt about contractions and commonly confused words like there, their and they’re.
We have been talking a lot about our ideas for narrative writing in small groups and as a class. These discussions have helped us to share ideas, prepare our vocabulary and plan our stories.
Humanities and Social Sciences
Australia has many unique natural features. With a partner we have researched a natural place of our choosing. We found out why it is special, where it is, what the flora and fauna and climate is there and whether we would like to visit one day. Come and see the posters in our class that we have created!
Science
We have been creative and tried to apply our thoughts on how machines help people to design dream cars. Some of us entered our designs in the Toyota dream car competition.
