COVID Updates
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our school community for the ongoing responsible approach to monitoring, testing and when necessary, informing us about COVID cases and/or close contact information. As you are aware we have had cases, and although the percentage has been around 10% of all students, this figure has remained steady over the past few weeks. Thank you for your vigilance and ongoing support.
All communication with regard to COVID is emailed to families using the email you have provided to us. At present we are having a few emails 'bouncing' back to us as invalid email addresses. It is crucial that we have correct email addresses for contacts 1 and 2 for every family of our school community.
You can update your details by contacting the school office via phone, email, a note via your child's home folder or with your child or in person. Our Term 1 Primary Progress Report will also be sent via email.
New Hay Fever Advice
Public Health has reviewed their advice about hay fever in the current COVID-19 environment.
Hay fever symptoms are similar to COVID-19 symptoms, so it’s important families know what they need to do if their child experiences hay fever symptoms.
If your child has hay fever symptoms, please keep them at home and test for COVID-19 using a rapid antigen test (RAT).
If your child tests negative on a RAT and symptoms continue, Public Health advises that you must do a second RAT 24 hours later or seek a PCR test.
If the second RAT or PCR remains negative, this is sufficient evidence for your child to return to school if they feel well.
If symptoms change or increase in severity, please see your treating medical practitioner for review.
Please know that Public Health advice can change at short notice, and we appreciate your patience as we respond to these changes as quickly as possible.
If you have any questions, please contact the school office. For more information, please visit the Tasmanian Government Coronavirus website or contact the Tasmanian Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738, or Department of Education COVID Support Hotline at COVID19support@education.tas.gov.au or on 1800 816 057.
Swan Vs Oyster Athletics Carnival
Our annual Swan vs Oyster Athletics Carnival will go ahead with the new proposed date on Thursday 17th March (weather permitting). We had hoped by postponing this event for a few weeks that there may have been a change in the COVID safe restrictions, however, unfortunately no spectators will be able to attend this event. Thank you in advance for your understanding, we appreciate your past involvement and will dearly miss the parent race this year.
School Association
Although we were looking forward to hosting a Term 1 function and fundraising BINGO/DJ Evening we will need to postpone due to Public Health Advice and our COVID safety response plan.
School Hours
Please remember our Duty of Care and supervision for students is from 8:30am - 2:45pm, unless your child is travelling home via the second bus. We understand there may be times when you cannot be on time, and this isn't always achievable so simply phone the office and let us know.
Have a great fortnight and keep well.

Thank you to those families who have made time to speak with me about their child's learning. I have enjoyed the opportunity to get to know you all a little more and share some exciting examples of your child's learning growth and first goals.
Today all families will receive their child's First Goals learning page. As discussed during Settling Interview, please jot down a Home goal directly onto the page and send back to school as soon as you can. We will photocopy and then send it back to you.
If you have not had a chance to book a session with me (face-to-face or over the phone), please don't hesitate to do so.
I will be available next week:
- Monday and Wednesday after 3pm.
- Thursday morning between 8:30-8:50am.
We believe the photographs above and the videos below are a lovely example of our Early Primary learners achieving some of their first goals.
We hope you enjoy a restful weekend :)

Today is World Day of Prayer
Today we attended the World Day of Prayer Service at All Saints Church.
Special thank you to Millie and Alice for representing our school leaders.
Launching into Learning - Great Start
Each week a new Launching into learning video will be posted to the Great Start website. You and your child can play, read and sing along in these interactive sessions. Why don't you put the video on with your child and have a sing along at home, you might even find some activities that will keep them entertained and learning all week!
The videos are password protected so you will need the above password to join the fun.
If you any questions please give the school office a call 62 578 126
When life gives you apples, you make apple pie!
It has been a beautiful week of learning in our middle primary class. We were gifted a box of apples by a lovely community member that were suitable for cooking, so we decided to turn them into apple pie! We have been counting in 5’s, so we counted the apples and realised that we had 148! We had a wonderful session in our new kitchen space, chopping our apples, cooking them and then placing them into the pastry cases. We were thrilled to share our apple pies with all the students and staff from our school. We are also very busily writing recounts on the process of creating our apple pies. Thank you for the apples!

Swansea Playground Report
This term in the playground has been great so far, the pump track has been doing very well and down ball has been striving. Although, we have been noticing some rubbish lying around, so to fix that problem we have introduced some new bins and moved them to new places on the oval and eating area. We want to just remind the students to put their rubbish in the bins. Apart from that the school has been doing great and we hope that continues.
From the Grade 6 leaders.
Technology in the Classroom
Teachers at Swansea Primary School believe that utilizing different types of technology in the classroom creates learners who are actively engaged and that it helps create pathways for differentiated instruction to meet the unique needs of students as individual learners. Students throughout the school have begun using different types of technology in the classroom including iPads, laptops, data projectors and digital cameras. With technology becoming such an important way of accessing information its presence in the classroom is vital for preparing students for the future. The use of technology during whole-class instruction can foster student engagement for auditory and visual learners and can increase student engagement helping student to reach their individual learning goals.
During STEAM this year students will spend time focussing on Digital Technology. The Australian Curriculum in Digital Technologies comprises two related strands:
- Digital Technologies knowledge and understanding – the information system components of data, and digital systems (hardware, software and networks)
- Digital Technologies processes and production skills – using digital systems to create ideas and information, and to define, design and implement digital solutions, and evaluate these solutions and existing information systems against specified criteria.
A new Computer Lab is currently being created in the Cottage and we can’t wait to start using it. Students are particularly interested in learning coding languages and controlling robots.

The Department of State Growth
The Department of State Growth (DSG) has released a Passenger Code of Conduct (the Code) for School Bus Services.
The Code sets out the expected standards of behaviour for students when using a bus.
It provides guidance and processes for bus operators and drivers to follow when a student breaches the Code, ensuring that all students, and breaches of the Code, are treated in a fair and consistent manner.
All operators of School Bus Services have adopted the Code as conditions of travel for the purposes of regulation 11 of the Passenger Transport Services Regulations 2013.
The Code has been developed by the Department of State Growth in consultation with the Tasmanian Bus Association (TasBus), the Department of Education, Catholic Education Tasmania and contracted school bus operators.
A shared understanding between all stakeholders of the expectations of students travelling on buses – and the consequences for any inappropriate behaviour – is essential for ensuring compliance with the Code.
