Year 3 and 5 students have had a busy week of NAPLAN testing. NAPLAN, although one test on one day, is a powerful tool to collect, analyse and record growth biannually. The four tests students complete in Year 3, 5, 7, 9 are:
Writing (The year 3's do this on paper)
Reading
Conventions of Lanuguage (Spelling and Grammar and Punctuation)
and Numeracy.
Many students finished their final test today and we are very proud of their colletcive efforts and application to this process. Although, we have had much sickness this week, catch up sessions will be held next week for those students who have been absent.
I am looking forward to the first school swimming carnival for the Year 3-6 students on Monday at Oatlands Pool and hope you can join us. Special thanks to Miss Walch and Melissa for another fantastic LiL- Year 6 Swimming and Water Safety/AustSwim program. And, of course, thank you to Angela and East Coast Coaches and our Doctors - Camilla and Andrew for their kindness and community mindedness, allowing our students to utilise their private pool and home for our lessons. What a great intiative we have to be proud of, here at Swansea Primary School.
The 1/2 class have many different inquiries on the go. It's difficult to keep track of them all! Class inquiries such as 'how to improve our reading and writing' are explored together daily as a whole class. On Friday afternoons we enjoy working towards finding the answers to our own questions and wonderings. Below are just a few photographs of some of our current inquiries: Worms, fossils, dress making, giant car creations, kindness, time, fractions, data and statistics.

What a busy fortnight for Grade 3/4!
Wow! What a busy 2 weeks it has been in our class! They say a picture paints a thousand words, so I'll keep it brief...
- We've been using a variety of units to measure many things in and outside of our classroom. What's the best unit of measurement for the diameter of a button? Or the height of a student? Or perhaps the distance from Swansea to Bicheno? Are they the same unit? How many metres are in a kilometre? These are the kinds of questions you might have heard in grade 3/4 maths this week.
- Woodwork is going well for Grade 4... our new computer shelf is well on the way to completion, so we'll update you soon!
- St John Ambulance visited us recently too. What a sad and injured bunch we were afterwards! Not really... it was a fabulous session and we learnt a lot about keeping safe and what to do to help someone in need.
- Beth and Leon led a wonderful session in the library for us to make some fabulous bookmarks. Thanks Beth and Leon!
- Our garden got a bit of a makeover today too, so watch this space for some growing updates!
- Oh, and spelling words are fun when we get to paint them outside!
There's so much happening so that wasn't as brief as I thought. We're looking forward to a fabulous rest of Term 1!

Happy World Sleep Day Friday 17th of March 2023
Sleep is Essential for Health
The World Sleep Society's annual World Sleep Day is being held on Friday 17 March. This year's theme is Sleep is Essential for Health.
Sleep is an essential, core pillar of health and is often under-valued and poorly understood. It's as important as diet and exercise. The Sleep Health Foundation aims to raise the awareness of the importance of sleep and The World Sleep Society's annual World Sleep Day is a great opportunity to do this. We want to empower and educate workplaces and the broader community about sleep health and its impact on physical and mental health, workplace productivity and safety. If you're interested in hosting an educational presentation, please consider booking a Sleep Health Foundation speaker to attend your workplace, school, or community group.
You can find out more about sleep as an essential pillar of health by reading our Fact Sheets. Here are some to get you started:
World Sleep Day is an annual event organized by the World Sleep Day Committee of the World Sleep Society, formerly World Association of Sleep Medicine, since 2008. Wikipedia
