It’s been a busy and fun fortnight at SPS! I've been on 4 excursions - two to the East Coast Heritage Museum, a home visit to meet a lovely past student - Mrs. Iris (Bub) Anderson and another to Huonville Primary School with some of our Grade 6 Leaders. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank:
- Mrs Anderson for her interview on what life was like at Swansea Primary School (82 years ago!)
- Maureen at the East Coast Heritage Museum for hosting us and welcoming us to the new exhibition (which is fantastic by the way) to learn more about how Swansea and school life has changed over time.
- And, last but not least, Ava, Arcena, Gabriel and Xearna for stepping outside of their comfort zone and participating with enthusiasm and pride as they represented Swansea Primary School at the Student Leaders Conference. I am super excited to see the impact all of our leaders have this year. Thank you to Lilly and Summa also for their encouragement and confidence during our recent Swan VS Oyster Athletics carnival. I am looking forward to heading down the highway again on Wednesday 10th March to watch all of the 3-6 students, participate in the Inter-Schools SPSSA Carnival. Pray for fine weather!
This week for the staff have been busier than usual too, with Progress Reports coming home today and Settling Interviews taking place next week. If you haven’t done so already, please book in a time to chat with your child’s teacher, just to touch base and to learn about your child’s personal and academic goals for the term/year ahead. All of our students are working very hard and your support in helping them to achieve their goals will be greatly appreciated.

This was one of the activities our student leaders participated in and shared when they got back to school. It was a lot of fun and I am looking forward to seeing how their teamwork skills develop over the course of the year.
Enjoy your long weekend everyone!
Kind regards,
Kristy Hay
Principal

On Thursday the 4th of February the Grade 2/3 class ventured to the East Coast Heritage Museum for an excursion. While we were there, we viewed a historical diorama of Swansea. We looked at historical tools, such as a sugar snipper, a raisin shredder, a vegetable cutter and a cockroach trap. We walked through the old classroom and saw a school uniform from 1860. Evie noticed the ink wells in the old desks and we saw some photos of the old school building.
Many students were excited to recognise a model of a Ningher Canoe in one of the rooms and share some of the facts that we learned about them last year with Maureen. We had seen a photo of this model last year, made by Rex Greeno.
We viewed some amazing maireener shell necklaces (one of which was made by Dulcie Greeno- Rex Greeno’s Mother), a bull kelp water carrier (made by Yvonne Copper) and some different types of woven baskets. We also saw some photos of a thylacine and learned that a thylacine tail was a lot like a kangaroo tail and helped them with stability.
Finally we walked through the War Memorial room, where we saw a variety of Military uniforms, war memorabilia and the big competition- sized Billiards table, which was once in the old school room and provided a place for ex-servicemen to socialise with other ex- servicemen.
This was a fantastic learning experience for our class and we look forward to our next visit to the East Coast Heritage Museum. Thank you very much to Maureen Martin Ferris.

Swan v Oyster Athletics Carnival
Swan vs. Oyster
Athletics Carnival
2021
On Tuesday 23rd of February we held our annual Swan vs. Oyster athletics carnival. The day was a great success and students showed a great level of sportsmanship throughout the course of the day, participating in all their events to their fullest potential.
This years Swan vs. Oyster carnival was a special event for students, parents, and staff as it was the first sporting event since COVID-19 that parents could come and be a part of rather than through zoom.
This year, students were timed in their events to start the collection of records for our carnivals. All students who placed first in their events all set the initial record for our schools data and we endeavour in future years to continue recording students times to then inform students and parents if any previous records were broken, adding that extra little piece of competition to the day and increasing student engagement.
The results of this year’s carnival were very close, with Swan house being the overall winner for the day finishing on 251 points, 17 points more than Oyster, who finished on 234 points. The results all came down to the throwing events, as the total points in the running events seen Oyster lead over Swan by four points. This goes to show you how close our carnivals are, so every point, even participation points are crucial!
Thank you to all that attended and helped make the day a huge success!

This week P/1 have been out and about investigating the plants in our new gardens. We made observations using our senses and sketched our plants. We used our sketches to compare and contrast our plants' features and discussed what plants need to survive. We enjoyed labelling our pictures using arrows and painting them with watercolours. They look great on our wall. Please feel free to come and have a look. Well done P/1.
Ella: "My plant might not need to be watered with a watering can because you can also get water from rain."
Riley: "Mine (leaf) is so long and thin, and so many."
Koko: "I'm painting my clouds grey and brown because they have lots of rain in them."
Aleighna: "Im doing beautiful flowers. All colours. Look some petal fall down."
Georgina: "All the water is getting to the roots."
Zeb: "look at my arrows, and I did some grass."
