Can you believe we are at the end of Week 7 already? And, what a wonderful week of learning we have had. From numberlines to oral health, gardening and folk dancing! Our teaching staff are constantly learning too and have all participated in an abundance of Professional Learning that has been on offer. We started the week with Principal Education Officer for Curriculum: Mathematics, Paul Tabart, who delved into the question “What type of maths learners do we want our students to be?” Followed by Mrs Brown and Mrs Wells attending the state ‘Big Ideas In Number’ PL in Launceston, investigating four 'big ideas' of number – trusting the count, place value, multiplicative thinking, and multiplicative partitioning – and examined the 'micro-content' that contributes to a students development in Mathematics; and last but not least, I have been on two days of Professional Learning on ‘Leading for Well-being’, the annual Tasmanian Principal’s Association Conference. I have had the privilege of listening to world class keynote speakers and attending workshops about wellbeing and how to inspire others to continually strive to be the best that they can be, and, I am feeling very grateful and looking forward to returning back to school to share my new knowledge with our staff.

Our Museum Excursion
P/1 have been wondering about Swansea a hundred years ago. To find out more about this we headed down to the Swansea Heritage Museum.
When we got back to school we talked about what we discovered.
Aleighna: “I like the necklace and the animals”
Ella: “I like the old Schools because it was good. I liked being there with Poppy”.
Emmett: “I like the museum canoe and the shell”.
Flora: “I liked the room that had necklaces in it because the necklaces looked pretty”.
Lincoln: “I like the jail because it was funny”.
Poppie: “I liked holding Mrs Wells hand”
Zeb: “ I liked the sward”
Thank you to Kathy for coming with us and to Maureen for answering all our questions. We look forward to visiting the museum again soon.

Grade 2/3
This week, the Grade 2/3 class have been spending some time reviewing our classroom and playground rules. During 2020, we brainstormed a set of rules that we all agreed to follow to make sure that everyone in our school could feel happy and safe.
Students were given some time to read through these rules and write suggestions for improving them. Together as a class we discussed them, made adjustments and agreed on our new and improved set of classroom (and playground rules).
The students have done a fantastic job of thinking about how to make sure that our time at school is happy and safe as well as how our actions and words can help with that. We discussed a range of scenarios where these rules might apply and what we can do if we are unsure about how to solve a problem.
We would love for families to read through our rules and we welcome any feedback.
We will use our inside voices when we are inside.
We will come into the classroom quietly and ready to learn.
We will communicate and listen respectfully at all times.
We will move safely around our school at all times.
We will respect everyone’s personal space.
We will look after school and personal property and use it respectfully.

Well done to our grade 3-6 athletes who represented Swansea Primary in the SPSSA Carnival at the Domain. Congratulations, to all of our participants and thank you for your comradeship and the support you shared for one another and the many other athletes who gave it their best. A great day!

SPSSA Report
On the 10th of March the 3/4/5/6 students had the annual SPSSA sports carnival. We left at 8:00am and made our way to Hobart. Everybody met up and settled down into our seats, applied sunscreen and put on our hats. The first race was 1500m which nobody from Swansea Primary ran in. The second race was 100m, most of Swansea ran in those races, which one of the students did an incredible job in winning in division 1! Ivy Hay will now go to Champions representing SPS! After 100m was 400m. In 400m, Millie was so close to getting first and only missed it by a whisker! After 400m, 200m, Shuttle Relays and 800m, the last race was Circular Relay. During those races there were also vortex, shot put and long jump which a few people did. Another student did an amazing job at long jump which he had never done before! He gave it his best shot so great job Xavier!
Overall Swansea came 6th out of 8 schools, Risdon Vale, Glenora, New Norfolk, Bagdad, South Arm, Rokeby, Herdsmans Cove and of course Swansea! I think it was a great day, that everybody enjoyed!

On 19th of March, some grade 6’s planted some Aboriginal Plants in the Bush Tucker Garden at SPS.
Alpine mint:
Alpine mints are perfect for birthday parties, weddings, or any type of family gathering. Alpine Mint is not a real mint. It is an evergreen bush that grows in rocky areas of mountainous regions. You can use alpine mint in the same way as regular mint such is in brownies or to make tea.
Mountain Pepper:
The fresh leaves of mountain pepper are suitable for use as a fresh herb, garnish or in the manufacture of pastes and purees. Traditionally, mountain pepper was used for its antiseptic properties and flavour. Dried leaf is used as flakes but mostly used as a spicy ingredient in flour mixes, sauces, mustards, soups, stews, cheeses and flavoured pasta.
Mountain Plum Pine
The Mountain Plum Pine is one of Australia’s few native conifers from a plant family which has existed in Southern Hemisphere. Mountain Plum Pine is a species of podocarp native throughout the Australian high country, from southern Tasmania through to the New South Wales highlands. You can eat the sweet fruit straight from the plant.
