Dear parents, families, students and community members,
We have had some wonderful community activities over the last week and I am continually amazed by how lucky it is for our Swansea kids to grow up in this community. Last Friday, students took part in Walk Safely to School Day. This annual event is an important date on the calendar, reminding students of the benefits of physical activity and the importance of road safety when walking to and from school. Thank you to the families who walked to school with us, it was a great morning. Also on Friday, Grade 6 Student Leaders were “out and about” with Steve and Linda from the Salvation Army. Students helped Steve and Linda with the Red Shield Appeal and were able to converse with the public while fundraising. Grade 6’s will have two more opportunities this term out and about, once visiting the Heritage Museum and another visiting the RSL. These opportunities foster community connectedness and we thank Steve and Linda for organising the activities.
This week is Volunteer’s Week. Swansea Primary School would not run the same without our volunteers and I would like to thank every volunteer for the work that they do to support our school. Our volunteers help in a range of ways, including our breakfast program, helping to run Woodwork at the Men’s Shed, in classrooms, and through our School Association. If you would like to become a volunteer through the school please contact us through the office.
Next Thursday, 29th May, we are holding our whole school Cross Country Carnival. This will be held at Jubilee Beach. Spectators are welcome and it will be great to see everyone there cheering our students on. Grade 3 – 6 students will then travel to Hobart on Monday 2nd June for the SPSSA Cross Country Carnival. Good luck to our runners!

Kind regards,
Anna Knowles

Join us for a fun packed morning of activities and adventures
All Welcome

Weeks 3 and 4 of Term 2 have been great!
We learn, we laugh, we read and create!
In woodwork, our pencil boxes are coming along fine,
We walked around Swansea to look at some signs.
Matt Massie welcomed us to the police station,
That was just the beginning of our investigation!
We found road markings and signs all over the town,
We looked right, we looked left and we even looked down!
In maths, gathering data of cars on our roads
We measured our Lilibet to see how much she grows!
Collecting our data, we make column graphs,
Our learning is always punctuated by laughs!
With chalk on the carpet, we use MAB's
Putting numbers in correct columns with accuracy, yes please!
Adding two digit numbers, regrouping with ease,
Some of our best learning is done on our knees!
In PE, we run our practise Cross Country track,
Running our hardest, we're anything but slack!
Teeball and footy are always such fun,
Next week, the Cross Country we shall eagerly run!
We write on boards that are covered in lines,
Our spelling and handwriting is looking fine!
We love the library, book fair and Beth,
Reading and playing games is just the best!
Our classroom family continues to grow,
We're so thrilled to welcome back Willow!
That's it for this fortnight, see you in two weeks,
Where we will be sharing some more learning sneak peeks!
Smiles,
Mrs Sparshott

It has been wonderful to have Emmett join us this term and to have our oversea travellers return this week so that we can have the whole 456 crew together! Some of the exciting learning that we have experienced has included the culture of cyber safety. We have also been reading with a partner, practising our accuracy with our fluency. Our continued research about animal adaptations is getting really interesting as we share our knowledge of some amazing facts and advantages that we’ve discovered.
We’ve also enjoyed taking turns in bringing Lilibet to the library to hear more stories from our ‘Wonder’ chapter book. This week Lilibet came to the library with us to view some of the great items that are available from the book fair. The Grade Six students are creatively preparing some skits during our literacy time at the beach to show how we can be kinder to one another. While we’re at the beach the Grade 45 students have been writing about empowerment and how this boosts our confidence. Grade 456 are looking forward to our school cross country next week.

Cyber Safety visit from Legal Aid Tasmania
On Thursday 8th May, year 3-6 students received a visit from Jade, a Community Education Officer and Lawyer from Legal Aid Tasmania. The purpose of Cyber Safety sessions are to educate young people in this fast moving space and keep children under the age of 18 safe online. The sessions included components of what cyber safety is, legal age for social media, privacy settings, online behaviours and consent in general, and common online situations. Jade and myself were very impressed as there was a big focus on being a kind and considerate person by showing empathy and respect for our peers.
All students were able to identify support pathways if they experienced a negative experience online and students came up with the most important message, this was to seek help when needed as nothing is so awful that you can’t tell someone about it.
Below is a cyber safety fact sheet from Legal Aid Tasmania, an easy and informative read. With a link to an online learning module “Being Cyber Safe” designed for young people, parents and the broader community. There is also a section dedicated to where to find help, including kids helpline, headspace and e-safety commissioner.

Keep an eye out for further LiFT events throughout 2025, where families will be invited into classes for different activities that promote literacy and numeracy. Grade 2/3 will be visiting Molesworth Environment Centre on Friday, the 20th of June 2025. We will be participating in a range of team-building activities that will guide students on an inquiry to consider the skills and attributes that are essential for successful teams and effective relationships with others. Students participate in a range of hands-on challenges in the outdoors that are designed to develop their communication, problem-solving, and creative thinking skills. By struggling through obstacles with their team and experiencing shared disappointments, students are explicitly taught skills in how to build resilience, persevere, and improve their ability to communicate respectfully in challenging situations.
The bus will depart at 8.00am sharp and return by 5.00pm. Please advise the school office if your child needs to be dropped off at Lady Gowrie Child Care Centre on return at 5.00pm.
If you do not wish for your child to participate in this educational experience, please let the school office know on 6257 8126 or via email at swansea.primary@decyp.tas.gov.au.
